1. How to use Tuuli wooden massagers

Tuuli wooden massagers are crafted from European beechwood for repeatable, comfortable self-massage at home. They are often used in wood therapy / maderotherapy inspired routines for:

  • gentle stimulation of circulation and lymphatic flow
  • supporting recovery after sport or long days on your feet
  • helping the skin look smoother in areas where cellulite is visible
  • everyday tension relief in legs, back, neck and shoulders

You can explore the full range here: All Massagers, Cellulite Massagers, Massage Rollers, Back Massagers, Face Massagers and Foot Massagers.

Before you start: general guidelines

  • Work on clean, dry skin. If desired, apply a small amount of light oil for better glide.
  • Always massage towards the nearest lymph nodes (for legs: upwards towards groin and hips; for arms: towards armpit; for back: towards armpits or hips).
  • Use slow, controlled strokes. You should feel pressure, but not sharp pain.
  • Begin with light pressure. Increase gradually if the skin reacts well.
  • Limit each area to about 5–10 minutes, then move on.
  • Drink water before and after your routine.

If you are new to these tools, start with a short session (5–10 minutes total) and see how your body responds over the next 24 hours.

Choosing the right tool for each area

  • Curved & straight rollers (Massage Roller, Curved Wooden Massage Roller): great for thighs, hips, calves, arms.
  • Back rope massagers (Back Massager): ideal for upper and lower back when you want to reach by yourself.
  • Contour / sculpting boards (part of many Maderotherapy Sets): used in sweeping strokes to “push” fluids towards lymphatic areas.
  • Wooden cups (Cellulite Massager): used with oil for gentle suction-and-release routines on thighs, hips and buttocks.
  • Handheld and dice/ball rollers (Handheld Massagers): good for smaller areas or when you want more focused pressure.
  • Face rollers and mini tools (Face Massager): designed for delicate work around the face, neck and décolleté.

2. Basic body & cellulite massage routines

These are general, home-use routines inspired by wood therapy techniques. They are not a replacement for professional treatment, but they give you a safe starting point at home.

2.1 Leg and thigh routine (circulation & cellulite focus)

  1. Warm-up strokes
With a straight or curved roller, roll lightly from ankles upwards towards knees, then towards hips. 1–2 minutes per leg.
  2. Deeper strokes on thighs
Increase pressure slightly. Work from just above the knees up towards hips and outer thighs. Always keep the roller moving upward, following the lymphatic direction. 3–5 minutes per leg.
  3. Targeted work on “problem areas”
Use a curved roller or textured roller (dice/ball/oval) on areas where cellulite is most visible. Short, repetitive upward strokes or small circular motions, still moving towards the groin and hips. 2–3 minutes per area.
  4. Optional: wooden cups
Apply a light oil. Place the wooden cup on the skin, gently squeeze to create light suction, then glide upwards in slow, controlled lines. Do not slide too quickly. 1–2 minutes per section.
  5. Finishing strokes
Finish with lighter, longer strokes using a roller or contouring board to “flush” the area in the same direction. 1–2 minutes per leg.

For more background on cellulite and research around massage, see our article Cellulite Massage: What Studies Suggest—and The Wooden Advantage.

2.2 Hips, buttocks and waist

  1. Stand or lie in a comfortable position.
  2. Use a curved roller on the outer hips and sides of the thighs, always moving towards the hips and waist.
  3. For buttocks, roll from the lower part upwards towards the hip bones and sacrum area.
  4. Use longer strokes with a contouring board along the sides, “pushing” towards the waist and then towards lymph nodes in the groin.
  5. Limit to about 5–10 minutes total for these zones per session.

2.3 Arms, back & neck

  • Arms: roll from wrists towards shoulders, focusing on upper arms and triceps. Always move towards the armpit.
  • Upper back and shoulders: use a back rope massager or handheld roller. Start at the mid-back, roll upwards and outwards towards shoulders and armpits.
  • Neck (back only): use gentle pressure and short strokes from the base of the skull down towards shoulders. Do not massage directly on the spine.

Keep the neck and upper back routine short (around 5 minutes) and always stay within your comfort zone.

3. Face & delicate areas

Face tools from the Face Massager collection are smaller and smoother to respect the thinner skin on the face and neck.

3.1 General tips for face massage

  • Always work on clean skin. Remove make-up first.
  • Apply a light serum or facial oil for glide.
  • Use very light pressure. The goal is relaxation and gentle stimulation, not deep work.
  • Move from the center of the face outwards and upwards, then down along the sides of the neck.

3.2 Simple face routine

  1. Neck preparation: from collarbone up towards jawline, then down the sides towards the collarbone again. 1–2 minutes.
  2. Jaw and cheeks: from chin towards ears in gentle, upward strokes. 1–2 minutes.
  3. Under-eye area: using the softest, smoothest part of the tool, glide from inner corner towards the temple. Almost no pressure. 1 minute.
  4. Forehead: from center of the forehead outwards towards temples, then from eyebrows upwards towards the hairline. 1–2 minutes.

Stop if you notice irritation, redness that does not fade, or discomfort around eyes or sensitive areas.

4. Cleaning & care for wooden massage tools

Tuuli massage tools are made from natural wood. Proper care keeps them smooth and pleasant on the skin.

4.1 Cleaning after each use

  • Do not clean wooden massagers under running water or in a dishwasher.
  • After each use, wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth to remove oil or lotion.
  • For extra hygiene, spray a small amount of alcohol-based disinfectant or dedicated equipment spray onto the cloth (not directly onto the wood), then wipe the tool.
  • Allow the massager to air dry completely at room temperature before storing.

4.2 Deeper cleaning and disinfection

  • If you use the tool on multiple family members, clean it carefully after every session.
  • Use a disinfectant recommended for non-porous surfaces, but always test on a small, hidden area first.
  • Avoid soaking, boiling or steam-disinfecting wooden massagers. Excess moisture and heat can damage the wood and glue joints.

4.3 Oiling and long-term care

  • If the wood starts to look dry, you can apply a thin layer of natural oil (e.g. mineral oil or a suitable wood oil) with a soft cloth.
  • Let the oil absorb completely, then wipe off any excess before using the massager on skin.
  • Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

5. Kitchen, home & gift products

Tuuli also makes everyday wooden products for the home: cutting boards, spoons and spatulas, clips, organizers, decor and personalised gifts. You can explore them here: Wooden Kitchen Utensils & Home accessories and Personalised Gifts.

5.1 Wooden cutting boards & kitchen utensils

These products can be washed, but they still need gentle care.

  • Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap right after use.
  • Do not leave wooden boards or utensils soaking in water.
  • Never put wooden kitchen products in the dishwasher. Heat and long exposure to water can cause cracking and warping.
  • Dry with a towel and let them air dry upright so air can circulate around all sides.

Regular oiling

  • When the surface looks dry or rough, apply food-safe mineral oil or board oil.
  • Pour a small amount onto a clean cloth and rub along the grain of the wood.
  • Let it absorb for several hours or overnight, then wipe away any excess.

Well-oiled boards and utensils are more resistant to stains and odors and feel smoother in daily use.

5.2 Home accessories & organisers

For non-food items such as wall hooks, racks, clips and organisers:

  • Dust regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
  • If needed, wipe with a mild soap solution and dry immediately.
  • Avoid aggressive cleaners, bleach and strong solvents.
  • Keep away from direct heat sources (radiators, stoves) and from constant direct sunlight.

5.3 Personalised wooden gifts

Engraved cutting boards, massage tools and decor items should be treated gently so the engraving stays sharp:

  • Follow the same washing rules as above, depending on the product type.
  • Do not scrub the engraving with steel wool or very abrasive pads.
  • Oil the surface regularly so the engraving remains clear and the wood does not dry out.

6. Wooden products for pets

We also offer natural accessories for dogs, cats and other pets in our Pet Accessories collection.

6.1 Using wooden pet massagers

  • Introduce the tool slowly so your pet can sniff and get used to it.
  • Use very gentle strokes along the back, sides and legs, always watching your pet’s body language.
  • Stop immediately if your pet shows signs of discomfort, stress or pain.
  • Do not use on open wounds, irritated skin or directly on the spine.

6.2 Cleaning pet accessories

  • Wipe with a slightly damp cloth after use to remove fur, dust or oil.
  • Disinfect in the same way as human massage tools: no soaking or dishwashers.
  • Let items dry fully before putting them back into baskets, boxes or closed spaces.

7. Video guides

9. Safety & FAQ

Is wood therapy / maderotherapy safe for everyone?

Tuuli massagers are designed for home self-care. They are not a medical device. Do not use them if you have uncontrolled health conditions such as severe varicose veins, active infections, open wounds, acute inflammation, blood clotting disorders or if your doctor has advised against massage. When in doubt, speak with a health professional before use.

How often can I use my wooden massager?

Most people start with 2–3 sessions per week on the same area, giving the skin time to recover in between. Listen to your body; if you notice lasting soreness, reduce frequency or pressure.

Will wooden massagers remove cellulite?

No tool can guarantee complete removal of cellulite. Regular massage, movement, hydration and a balanced lifestyle can support circulation and the appearance of the skin. Our cellulite massagers are designed to help you keep a consistent, comfortable routine at home.

Can I share my massager with other people?

For hygiene it is better if each person has their own tools, especially for face and areas with thinner skin. If you share, always clean and disinfect the tools thoroughly between uses.

What if the wood changes colour or shows small marks?

Natural wood can darken slightly over time, especially where it comes into contact with oils and skin. Small colour changes and marks are normal and show that the tool is being used. Cracks, deep splits or sharp edges, on the other hand, mean the product should be replaced.

I still have questions. How can I reach you?

You can contact our team through the FAQ page or directly via Contact. We’re happy to help you choose the right tools and refine your routine.
